Safe braking in difficult weather conditions – ROTINGER guide

Driving a car involves constant analysis of the traffic situation. Stopping a vehicle is a maneuver that we perform many times on the road. However, we must be careful at every opportunity. Safe braking in difficult weather conditions is a great art.

In modern motoring, the level of safety is very high. The design of cars combined with systems such as ABS or ESP give a sense of confidence behind the wheel. Unfortunately, it can be deceptive, because in difficult weather conditions the laws of physics come into play. And very often even the best safety measures will not protect drivers from the effects of reckless driving. That is why responsibility behind the wheel is so important.

The right distance from other vehicles

As Poles, we have a big problem with maintaining a safe distance from the vehicles in front of us. Unfortunately, the proverbial bumper-to-bumper driving is still popular. It is assumed that outside the city, the distance from the car in front of us should be at least half the speed at which we are driving. When the speedometer shows 80 km/h, we should follow the vehicle at a distance of 40 meters. All this to have time to react and manoeuvre.

Problems with stopping the car not only in winter

Very good visibility and a dry road surface, these factors increase self-confidence behind the wheel. However, pollen brought from orchards, fine sand on the road or oil stains can dramatically change the grip of the wheels on the road in a second. Additionally, it should be remembered that hot temperatures affect human perception. And for many people, these are difficult weather conditions. Very often the reaction time is extended, which can lead to running over the rear of the vehicle in front.

Safe braking in difficult weather conditions

Modern cars support the driver in difficult manoeuvres. Emergency braking in most cases should be focused on several activities. Firstly, if the vehicle has a working ABS system, you need to press the brake pedal with maximum force and do not release it until you stop or if the situation on the road allows you to interrupt emergency braking. Thanks to the fact that the wheels are not blocked, the second action is most often to make corrections to the driving path.

If the car also has a traction control system, also avoiding obstacles on the road while braking allows the car to skid. However, it must be remembered that without working brakes, effective braking is practically impossible. Therefore, according to the service schedule, the level of wear of the brake discs and pads should be checked.

A thing that is neglected, which affects the length of the braking distance, are the tires. The optimal level of tire pressure, as well as the correct tread height, these two elements can significantly support the braking system in its operation. Therefore, it is worth checking the tire pressure regularly, for example every other refueling. And during the new season, also checking the tread size.
