Electric parking brakes, advantages and disadvantages. ROTINGER guide
Electric parking brakes (EPB) are one of the most modern solutions used in the automotive industry. Their popularity is constantly growing, due to the convenience of use and additional functions that increase road safety. Does this solution have any weaknesses? In today’s ROTINGER guide, we will answer this question.

Disadvantages of electric parking brakes
The parking brake in the automotive industry has a very long history. In recent decades, it has been increasingly supported by electronics. Convenience is one of the advantages of such a solution. However, there are also weaknesses.
How does an electric parking brake work?
The electric parking brake is a modern alternative to the traditional handbrake, which was applied mechanically. The EPB operates using a button that activates the electronic control system. This sends a signal to the central activator or directly to the electric motors located in the brake calipers. Depending on the car model, the brakes can be activated on one or both axles of the vehicle.
Advantages of electric parking brakes
One of the greatest advantages of the EPB is its simplicity of use. The user only has to press the button, which eliminates the need to use force, as was the case with the traditional handbrake. This functionality is particularly appreciated by people with limited physical fitness. The button also looks much more discreet compared to the lever.
The EPB works more effectively than the classic handbrake, because it often locks all four wheels, not just the rear ones. Thanks to integration with the ABS and ESP systems, it ensures better vehicle stability during braking, which is especially important in emergency situations.
The lack of a traditional handbrake lever allows for better use of space inside the vehicle. This frees up space in the centre console for storage or other conveniences.
In modern vehicles, the electric parking brake can operate automatically, for example by activating when the engine is switched off. This provides additional protection against the vehicle accidentally rolling away, which increases safety in parking lots and when starting uphill.
Disadvantages of electric parking brakes
Despite its many advantages, the EPB is prone to failure, especially in difficult weather conditions. Low temperatures can cause the calipers to freeze, making it difficult or impossible to release the brake. In turn, mechanical wear of parts such as the brushes of electric motors can lead to more frequent repairs
One of the major challenges with EPB is its operation when the battery is discharged. The electrical system will not operate if the vehicle battery is discharged, which can prevent the brake from releasing and lead to the vehicle having to be towed.
Electric parking brakes require specialist equipment and knowledge for repair and maintenance. Brake pad replacement in some systems, such as TRW, requires the use of advanced diagnostic software, which increases operating costs
Electric parking brakes offer many benefits, such as convenience, safety and saving space in the car. However, their complex design and susceptibility to failure, especially in winter conditions, can be significant drawbacks. As this technology develops and becomes more common, it is worth remembering to service it regularly and that repairs may require specialist knowledge and tools.
